Unique Butcher Block Hand Crafted from Last U. S. Navy Wooden Hull Mine Sweepers

  
This end grain, butcher block is a unique creation that is hand crafted from laminated solid white oak. It's crafted from reclaimed wood used to construct a series of 14 U. Navy Mine Countermeasure Vessels (MCM) Avenger Class. These vessels were built at Peterson Builders Inc. Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin with the first keel laying in 1983 and final completed in 1991. This wood was laminated during the construction of the vessels. This wood was generated as cutoffs from "blocking".

Blocking is reinforcement used in hull and deck locations where additional strength or stiffness is needed. Blocks were laminated oversize so they could be fit into place. Excess material was trimmed to fit and is referred to as "cutoffs". The reclaimed oak cutoff was originally from a key hull reinforcement.

It was resized into this substantial table top butcher block / cutting board. The butcher block weighs in at just over 10 lb, with a size of 7 1/2" by 14" and is 3 1/2 thick. 4 rubber pads on bottom stabilize well. Laser engraving on sides show a outline / profile of the MCM on one side and a title block with some history on the other. A inscribed tag on the bottom identifies the butcher block crafter who was a shipfitter on these MCMs.

Butcher block is treated with a food safe mineral oil / wax which gives it a low luster water/stain repellent finish. The butcher block will have a waxy feel when it arrives. I like the finish, as most liquids and stains tend to roll off. If you want a more polished look you can wipe it down with paper cloth or fabric rag. Remember, all wood butcher blocks and cutting boards will need care over time.

Hand wash and re-treat with conditioner as needed. NOTE: This Butcher butcher block is made from reclaimed wood from the Avenger Class Mine Sweepers (MCM).
