For Salea pair of 1840s high poster twin beds, hand made from cherry and poplar wood for the Mount de Chantal Visitation Academy for young ladies in Wheeling, West Virginia. The academy was opened in 1848 by the Sisters of Visitation who were originally from France. Chillingworth, now retired, acquired them directly from the academy. The posts are 68 high. The top of the side rails are 16 1/2 from the floor.
The original side rails were shorter than modern beds, so new longer ones were hand made out of cherry wood to replicate the originals and were stained and finished to match. The beds can be used with both mattresses and box springs or just a mattress alone because the slats are so close together (eight on each bed). These 170 year old beds are solid and in wonderful shape. Their simple, basic style is timeless. Also included with the beds at no extra cost if desired, are the arched canopy top frames custom made in 1979 for each bed along with cloth canopy covers and side curtains. Photos are available on request. The beds did not originally have arched canopy tops like these.
The sale does not include mattresses and box springs.
