For sale is an outstanding hand carved gold gilded 1920s American Arts and Crafts style picture frame. This frame formerly held a painting by Theodore Wendel (1859 - 1932). Theodore Wendel was one of the most respected American impressionists who painted with Monet in Giverny France. The painting was titled Little Vagabond Drinking From Jug.

With the Christies label we know it was on the painting at least until 2011. It has big bold 6 1/4 molding widths.

Each corner features a three row grooved spade over spade design with a simple fleur de lis joined corner cap. The longitudinal and horizontal moldings feature crown tipped fluted columnar elements on the outer edge. The deep coves feature exquisite hand chased organic shaped pattern-work throughout.

The surface is a gold leaf finish in probably 23K gold. The frame most likely came from a Boston frame maker. Theodore Wendel lived in Boston for just over a year before moving 35 minutes up north outside of Boston in Ipswich, which is where we was in the 1920s while painting the original painting to this frame. This frame can be resized to fit a standard canvas. It would also look spectacular with a piece of antique mirror glass.

Frame - 54 3/4 x 36 3/4. Rabbet - 43 3/8 x 25 3/8. Sight - 42 1/4 x 24 1/4. Molding Width - 6 1/4. The item "Superb 1920s Boston Arts & Crafts Picture Frame From A Theodore Wendel Painting" is in sale since Tuesday, April 7, 2020.
