Sculpture Carved From Antique Chestnut Beam, part of an old jack for raising monumental stone blocks. The figure was carved by renowned artist Andrew Wielawski who recovered the piece of wood while restoring the jack for his own use lifting marble statues. Evidence of the original purpose of the wood, such as indentations for metal brackets or the round hole for the ratcheting handle, have been left to show the origins of the wood, which is more than a hundred years old. Googling'wielawski' and clicking on images will show the type of work the sculptor produces, both in his studio in Kentucky or the one near Carrara, Italy, where the wood and mechanical parts of the jack came from.
