Scandinavia Swedish 1846 HND Rose Folk Paint Flax Scutching Knife from Sweden
While it is rare to find Swedish or Norwegian folk art with dates before 1850, this painted flax knife has the nice early date of 1846 and is initialed H. And retains it's early rosemaling. The Swedish style rose painting features very lovely greens, oranges, yellow, and black. Scutching knives were only painted on one side and were meant to hang on the wall. This was their description: "This "Slakt-Kniv is a Swedish family knife dated 1846 H. D, (Harald Nilssons Daughter), with original painted flowers. This is a bride's wedding present on her marriage. One of the most sought after artifacts in Scandinavian. Utilitarian flax tools were part of the farm's equipment and were used to batter flax, loosening the fibers for spinning into linen thread. This is a decorative example of a farm tool traditionally made by a groom for his bride to be. Measures 20 1/4 inches long x 4 1/2 inches wide x 7/8 inches deep.
