SANTERO JOHN TOLLARDO TAOS, NM VINTAGE HAND-CARVED CEDAR ST FRANCIS SANTO. FROM A SANTA FE ESTATE. In the tradition of the Northern New Mexican santeros, this is an authentic cedar carving by one of the best, John Tollardo from Taos, NM. And this is one of John Tollardo's best carvings. As any collector can see, Tollardo has let the cedar speak to him. The carving follows the growth of the tree. This is a depiction of the Patron Saint of animals, St Francis. The hem of St Francis' robe comes from a natural branch of the cedar tree. There are 3 birds at the base of the Santo. You could view this as either a part of a tree, the Saint's robe flowing behind him or a rock next to the Santo. It is all carved from one piece of the tree which is what makes it so wonderful and unique. But it is the detail of St Francis' robe and face that make this carving so beautiful. Santero Tollardo has perfectly carved the beard and mustache, the robe, the face and the Saint's hood. This is a very large piece of art, which is quite impressive. The Saint is holding a perfectly carved cross in his left hand, and there is a bird sitting on the cuff of his right hand. The style of the carved face is very typical of the Northern NM Santero style, and the quality is the highest found in Taos. I have lived here most of my life, own a couple of Santos and this one is the best I've ever seen. It's from my aunt's estate in Santa Fe. This item is in the category "Art\Art Sculptures".
