February 1, 2013 - 11:14AM. RARELY seen sculptures from one of the Fleurieu's most recognised artists, Robin Turner, are coming out of the woodwork. An exhibition in McLaren Vale opens tonight to celebrate the wood carver, who was forced to give up his passion after suffering a stroke three years ago. Turner, 69, has created sculptures from recycled timber and iron since 1975.

The King Of Belgium and Duke of Edinburgh each own his iconic Hobbity Boxes - small boxes crafted from branches or fence posts, which Turner named after Tolkien's Lord of the Rings characters. His long-time friend Cedar Prest, who cared for him for two years after his stroke, is collating the exhibition using pieces previously commissioned for private collections. "For the first time the public will see items that he made but are privately owned, " Ms Prest said.

He is larger than life and really is a national sort of treasure as a wood worker. He was a pioneer in the way he used Australian timbers - he has a natural flair. Recently visited Turner at Christies Beach Residential Care Services, where he moved about a year ago.

He said he drew inspiration from the world "and the wood I work with". "I just feel so lucky to be alive, " Turner said. The exhibition will also display pieces depicting the Fleurieu by some of Turner's long-time friends and fellow artists, including David Dridan, Robert Hannaford, Barb Leslie and David Dallwitz.
