Rare YORUBA NAGO GELEDE crest mask 50 cm from Nigeria African Art
Very old crest with its original colors: red, blue, green, white. The Yoruba occupy southwestern Nigeria and the central south-eastern region of Benin under the name of Nago. The crest is used for the festive dances of the Gélédé company. Polychrome crusty patina, has traditional ethnic scarifications.
These masks pay homage to mothers, especially the oldest among them, whose powers: or mothers who can no longer conceive. Would be comparable to those of the Yoruba gods, or Orisa.
