Up for grabs are these six wonderful, original antique Jacob & Josef Kohn bentwood chairs circa late 1800s early 1900s. These pre-date 1914, which is when they teamed up with Mundus and then later with Thonet, in 1922. These differences of the manufacturing alliances are conveyed on later chairs within the labels.
These were made in Vienna, Austria. A version of the same chair model (albeit with a padded seat) is in the New York Met Museum.I cannot find a match of these anywhere else online. Is the only version of the same hairpin chair that I can find that has the same 4. Support struts that run through the legs and not the more usual singular, circular support.
Pretty great condition for age, all chairs are very sturdy and very comfortable and also lightweight. I have a feeling they were professionally re-caned at some point, but that was probably done a while ago as the tops have a nice tone to them.
Cane work is all very solid with no tears. There are some small re-enforcements to the underside of the hoops on a couple of the chairs, which was probably done when they were re-caned, but these are not visible in the upright position. All the chairs are stamped and labelled the same way, although some of the labels have not lasted as well through the years as others.
Overall a great set of very rare chairs in very usable and solid condition. 19 Seat Height From Floor. 35 Floor to Top Of Chair Back. Please feel free to write and ask questions.
