AFRICAN CEREMONIAL PUNU MASK FROM GABON. An African hand carved ceremonial Punu mask that originates from Gabon and is carved out of wood and set in the colors of White and black. This type of African mask has become so sought after that they are often found in museums and art collections.

The mask represents the spirit of an ancestor and is commonly found throughout western and central Gabon. The beautiful hairstyle, with comb is a common feature among the Punu women. In some cases scarification on foreheads are clearly visible. Bought in London from an african art dealer in the early 1990's.

Genuine antique appearance with slight signs of historical wear and tear. Most items were collected by ourselves while we were living and working in Papua New Guinea in the 1980's. We are now downsizing from our large old farmhouse to something more manageable for our age.

Some carvings have signs of wear and tear due to age. Some have cracking which occurs as a result of taking items from the tropics to a colder, drier environment.
