Up for sale is a very special painting by artist John Wells James American, b. The piece is unsigned, oil on board.
It was a family piece, personal property of Virginia James. It is an autumn landscape, Pennsylvania row houses from the back, terra cotta and grey color, framed. Size 15 3/4" x 19 1/4" wide. A post-impressionist landscape painter of some renown, John Wells James was born February 2, 1873 in Brooklyn, NY and died on April 3, 1951, while traveling in France.
Self-taught, painting almost exclusively in oils, he used a technique called impasto. This layering of paint allowed his brush strokes to be visible, creating a wonderful texture to his work.
He was a member of the Allied Artists of America, the Brooklyn Society of Art, the Salmagundi Club, the Brooklyn Painters Society, the Rockport Artists Society and the American Federation of Artists. Ownership continued within the family since their creation and therefore unsigned works are attributed as his.
