Because of that, roses are a very common subject among local artists of every kind. You don't have to go very far in Portland to see roses represented in paintings, carvings, concrete sculpture, and even welded sculpture. Our sports arena area is called the Rose Quarter. We have the, "Rose Park, " and many parks that take advantage of Portland's ability for roses to grow abundantly.
This carving is by a local carving veteran, Vernon Newman. This carving is signed and dated, 1986 by the artist. The carving appears to be framed, but the artist carved all of what you see from a single plank of clear mahogany wood. The frame edge wasn't applied after the carving was finished, it was carved from the single block of wood. The carving is quite masterful.
The hand of this woodworker was very skilled and his work is fine and exacting. You can see the measurements of this carving in the provided photos.
I photographed this carving in many settings. I have provided photos using a flash and without a flash. The photos without a flash show the very deep graphic relief carving of this beautiful rose, leaves, and rose buds. The photos are both indoors and outside. I wanted you to be able to see the contrast of light and how this carving truly pops to life in various light settings.
