Two letters, one dated November 1, 1921 by Leonard Wood discussing the importance of the work done by United States Surgeon General William Crawford Gorgas with regards to the Panama Canal and the other dated January 6, 1922 from Maria Gorgas in appreciation for the letter from Leonard Wood which will be of value for her to use for the book she is writing about her husband. Both these letters are carbon copies which were kept by prominent journalist Mark Sullivan in his files. Mark Sullivan was considered to be one of the most widely respected journalists of his day corresponding with Presidents Theodore Roosevelt, William Taft, Woodrow Wilson, Warren Harding, Calvin Coolidge and Herbert Hoover.Sullivan was a confidant to Theodore Roosevelt as well as a good friend and confidant to Herbert Hoover. In addition to Presidents, Sullivan corresponded with many notable politicians, businessmen and literary figures of the day including Arthur Conan Doyle who he was good friends with as well as Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Orville Wright and many other prominent and influential people from the 1890's to mid-1900's. Sullivan correspondence can be found archived in the manuscript division of the Library of Congress and in the Herbert Hoover Institution Archives. Both typed carbon copy letters are toned with age and have typical fold creases. Stamped on the back of each letter is'THE EXECUTIVE FOR OFFICIAL USE ONLY' in purple colored ink.
