Initially "Santos" were only carved of traditional Spanish Catholic Saints, as time went on the Creoles started representing local Caribbean and South American images of their own venerated Saints, sometimes becoming syncretized with images of African Deities and Indigenous Taino Deities. Finally as time passed these "Santos" Images acquired a truly distinctive Puerto Rican Style.
