The provenance that accompanies this collection is wonderful coming from the personal collection of Dr. Peterson who graduated from Hillsdale College & University of Michigan Medical School in 1943 and served in the Navy in the final days of WWII and later in Korea. Carl and his wife moved to the Panama Canal Zone to practice medicine for 10 years during the 1970's of which he personally acquired all works. He became incredibly close with different aboriginal people groups whom they gifted many carvings. Not only did he have a personal fascination with carvings but also had a significantly large collection of Pre-Columbian pottery. Carl traveled and collected the majority of carved aboriginal works from.

Sambu River, Panama, Choco Peoples. San Blas Islands, Kuna Peoples.

He also participated in many excavations uncovering many Pre-Columbian pottery examples from. Graves of Sitio Conte, Cocle Province.

Carl kept a hand written journal documenting when and where each piece was acquired indicated by a combination of letters (identifying the place of origin) and a number (indicating the number piece from that particular region) seen either written on the bottom of each object or on a taped label. The people groups loved him so much he even has indicated that Chiefs had personally given him their personal items of affection. Carls also became close friends with Eva Harte whom he traded pieces back and forth with. Up for sale is the most rare and fine wood carving I currently have available showing a large double authority stick from the Sambu Choco Indians of Panama's Darien forest.

What makes this such a special example is that is was given by the Sambu village Chief Jauleto to Carl as a gift. Measuring 25 inches tall the work is in excellent original condition with the reference number "SA-32" as seen written on its paper label (faded) which is recorded as "Large Double Authority Stick - 2 Males Back to Back on an Elephants back made by Jualeto, Chief of the Sambu Village - a Gift" in Carl's recorded notebook of acquisitions. Please take note the different arm position each figure shows, one with hands down to his sides while the other crosses them over his chest. This is a tremendously rare and unique indigenous wood carving from the Indian chief himself! The images provided accurately represent the quality, condition and aesthetic beauty of this fine carving but if you have any questions please feel free to ask prior to purchasing! All available works would make an exceptional addition to anyones collection from rare small people groups who make fascinatingly beautiful work.
