ASMAT CANOE PROW FROM IRIAN JAYA. A particularly fine example produced by an expert Asmat woodcarver. The canoe prow features three Asmat warriors. Two are seated and one is reclining. Their bodies are decorated with typical scarification designs. The prow also features the head and beaks of hornbills, important headhunting symbols.

It is painted with white lime, black charcoal and red ochre. Weight (unpacked): 2.73 Kilos. Most items were collected by ourselves while we were living and working in Papua New Guinea in the 1980's. We are now downsizing from our large old farmhouse to something more manageable for our age. Some carvings have signs of wear and tear due to age.
