The box bottom was carved from one piece of wood and the lid was attached with leather hinges, both of which have broken. Although it could have been used for anything my guess is it was made for a pencil box. The hinges were attached with early square nails and round headed tacks. The original owner wrote something on the lid but I can't quite make it out. There is also a note in the box stating it was for a little girl Ida Trostle who was born in 1866, while in her fathers shop.
