Antique Swedish Wedding Chest Dowry Trunk from 1861 original lock/key

  

Wedding chests were a traditional gift to marrying couples in Sweden on their wedding day. The chest would be decoratively painted specifically for the couple. The Bride's initials and the year of the wedding are painted on the front, signifying that the contents were the property of the wife, brought to the marriage.

This particular chest is hand painted in the original earth tone and floral pattern and dates from 1861. It has not been restored and is completely original and in very good condition, considering its age.

It has original iron handles, lock and skeleton key - all functional. On the inside of the trunk, in addition to the traditional storage box on the right hand side, there is a very unique, hand written and painted Swedish poem in early Swedish - more akin to Danish, actually, that discusses the movements of time and the second coming of Christ.
