Amazing antique willow wood, sisal, with hand wrought iron reinforcements, basket from Shanxi in northern China. This is a market basket that is about 19.75 inches long, 12 inches wide and 12 inches tall at the height of the handle. The willow strips of the basket are held with sisal, a traditional very strong fiber made from agave plants.

The formed bent wood handle, which is about 1.25 inches in diameter, is reinforced by hand wrought iron on both sides in a pattern that resembles a Chinese character fitted into the body of the basket and attached to the handle. These are very old iron reinforcements or repairs. Baskets from this place and of this age all have similar iron reinforcements while newer examples have similar reinforcements in brass. Because the metal elements are common to baskets of this form from Shanxi it is possible that they are original to the basket. The basket may have been lacquered in black lacquer originally. There are some breaks and losses especially to the edge; please see the photos. This is a super strong basket of an entirely suitable and convenient size for use as a market basket or to display. The integrity and strength of this piece is amazing; it could be used for 100 more years.
