Antique Dome Steamer Trunk 1880 Vintage from Portugal Lock, Keys, Tray

  
For sale is this large domed trunk from the 1880s, once belonging to Isabel Santos when she and her family immigrated to Provincetown, Mass. It was offered for restoration by a descendant now living part-time in Asheville, N. A canvas side panel on the trunk was stenciled with the name S. The stenciled canvas panel is included in the sale, but not shown in photos. The trunk is constructed of a pine box with 13 hardwood slats across the top, front, sides, and back; 28 pieces of steel hardware; and 3 solid hinges. It measures 30.5 inches wide, 20 inches front to back and 24 inches tall at the crown of the dome. It was restored with new brown leather handles, an antique brass lock with keys, and a new lid stay to hold it open otherwise the trunk and its appointments are original. All of the wood surfaces have been cleaned, sanded, and hand-finished with tung oil. The metal hardware has been cleaned and finished with two coats of Rustoleum Satin Black paint.

In addition to its gorgeous wood grains, some distinctive features are a steel lid handle, working front latches and lock, and ornate iron handle end caps. The bottom has working rollers and has been painted and sealed, while the inside has been fitted with a replacement removable tray. We take great care in the refinishing of our trunks.

The wood is hand-sanded and smoothed with steel wool between finishing coats of Danish oil, tung oil or satin varnish. All hardware is carefully cleaned and hand-painted when necessary using detailed art brushes.

The bottom is cleaned, sanded, treated with a special rust inhibitor, if necessary, painted with Rustoleum Satin Black enamel, and finished with clear satin polyurethane so its safe to place on carpet or hardwood floors. Each trunk comes with care instructions. It is absolutely stunning - couldn't be happier. What a great item thanks for offering it!! This trunk was meticulously restored and is gorgeous! Looks great in my den.
