Antique African Ibo / Igbo Tribal Helmet Mask from SE Nigeria Agbogho Mmwo

  
Welcome to the sale of this beautiful African mask. The mask comes from the Ibo (Igbo) tribe of Southeastern Nigeia and depicts a beautiful girl, that comes to man from the afterlife. These masks are called Agbogho Mmwo and are danced with by young men in tight, colourful costumes during harvest festivals and at ceremonies in honour of ancestors, women and the earth gods. The present Mmwo mask is carefully crafted. It has a white-coloured face (kaolin) that indicates that this mask character has come from the afterlife, the realm of the dead.

It has original black-dyed decoration and scarification marks to its face, which is nicely carved and very expressive. The top is crested with an elaborate carved hairpiece. All in all a very beautiful and interesting piece of African art. (please note stand not included). In good condition commensurate with its age and use.
