This carving can be hung on a wall, or to be placed upon a stand (even a tall vase would well support this mask upon a desk or table). The photos in this listing were taken with the carving placed upon a 14 inch tall vase. As I have already said, this mask is entirely hand crafted. The wood is a very dark and heavy wood.
I believe it to be African Ironwood. The carving is exquisite and the workmanship is highy detailed.
The hair has been hand braded. It captures the essence of a fearless tribal warrior. The mask is a bit haunting, which may attract some and detract others. The mask is representative of a time mostly but not entirely past -- and of culture that is nearly, but not quite forgotten.
With my own eyes I have seen places where time seems to have stood still for hundreds of years. I personally traveled (from Europe) with a man who had very similar decorative facial scaring that's depicted in this carving. Although few young individuals have this decorative "Tattoo" scaring, a few of the mid-aged and elderly do. It's not that uncommon. I have provided many photos for your review.
As stated above, the mask would be worn over most heads. It measures approximately: 12 inches tall, and about 10 inches wide (measures with the spread of the hair). I will package this carved mask with great care. This item is in the category "Antiques\Ethnographic\African\Masks". The seller is "nyckelharpabuilder" and is located in this country: US.
