This is a used item. Due to the nature and age of these artifacts they may have fracture cracks, chips, and missing elements. These items were not used as art pieces but rather played a major role in the traditional rituals practices of tribal religions. Over all the artifact is stellar for its age! This one of the most graceful Debles I have seen in a long time. The piece was clearly used for celebratory or traditional rites and initiations of adolescents into adulthood.

Traditionally women would carry these by the figure's arm and "pound" the ground along to the rhythm of the beating drums. Arms of the piece has clear fading (where women normally hold it during the initiations celebrations). The bottom has some evidence that it was pounded to the ground some pounding.

The patina is so beautiful. Scarification marks on her face, cheeks, temples, chest, and legs. Eyes closed and arms to her side as if it is in communication with the spirit world. This is a beautiful piece. The patina is so beautiful and the wood still sweats adding to the beauty. She has clear scarification marks on her cheek, temples, chest, and legs to identify her ethnic group. Although the Senufo people are spread through Ivory Coast and west of Burkina Faso, this piece is from Burkina Faso.
