Hello and thank you for taking your time to view our listing. Offering for sale is the exact shown antique hand-made wooden storage box with hinged lid. The attached photo's with this listing show the exact antique box being offered for sale. The original owner of the estate was an actual historian and collector of many unique and rare items, along with several pieces of antique furniture.

In the items acquired we found this basic old wooden box. Upon opening it and examining it all over, we noticed the label that had been placed on the inside that is shown in the 3rd attached photograph. We also found very faint cursive pencil handwriting on the bottom of the box as well.

As shown, the label indicates the box was crafted in 1854 by a gentleman named George Sears, and it goes on to say that Mr. Sears was a great grandson of former president John Quincy Adams.

On the bottom of the box, written in pencil, and it is very faint from fading over time, you can see where George Sears wrote his name in cursive and left the date of the box of 1853. This writing on the bottom of the box can be seen in photo's #9, #10, and #11.

There was nothing else inside the box other than the shown label, and the previous owner nor his related family knew nothing of the piece or it's history etc. It is more than obvious that the box is very old and most likely from the years stated, as you can see the square head nails that were used. You can also see that George Sears put his first and last initial on the top of the box with a form of brass tacks, which was also common around this time period.

We have no idea who placed the label inside the box, or whose handwriting that is. We did some brief searching of the family tree online of John Quincy Adams, but pretty much got lost and gave up, as we did not locate a George Sears. We do believe though he most likely could be a descendant as we did come across some other members with the last name of "Sears" that were in the family tree. The box itself we assume was made for possibly storage of tools or such and at one time had a handle and latch on the front.

So very possible it could have been Mr. We are offering the shown antique box for sale strictly based upon the information we provided to you along with the shown exact photo's we recently took of the box.

The box measures almost 18 inches in length from left to right, is a little over 9 inches in height with the lid closed, and has a front to back depth of a little over 7 inches.
