For sale we have a magnificent vintage coffee table that came from the Amazon Rainforest in the 1960's. Made entirely from a single tree, the top consists of a massive slab of Saman Wood that measures 3-1/4 inch thick. This one-of-a kind piece weighs well over 100 pounds! The diameter of the top is irregular, and measures between 46-3/4 and 40 inches. The Table is solidly supported by 3 legs, and cross stringers, all from the same tree.

The long-time owner of this very-rare piece offered the following history. National Geographic and ecology scientists predict that ALL the world's rainforests will disappear within 100 years unless the deforestation ends. In the 1960's, I lived in South America and traveled in the wild places of the headwaters of Amazon's rainforests. In eastern Columbia I bought, at a forestry shop, the saman wood coffee table seen in the photos. It was cut from an enormous old growth rainforest tree.

The huge slab was then made into an elegant coffee table. Fortunately, in the 1960's, the rainforests were not under siege as they are today. As the rainforests are being cut down at an alarming rate, it will be harder and harder to find the old growth trees. The value of such old growth rainforest wood continues to rise. I have never seen another coffee table like this one anywhere else.

This piece is in overall excellent condition, and exactly as pictured and described. This is truly a rare piece of history that will not be available anywhere else!
