This is an antique hand carved wood embellished African mask which was collected from the Ivory Coast and was made by the Dan tribal people. This Dan ceremonial mask is decorated with cloth medicine bundles, cowry shells carved wooden'teeth', boar tusks and raffia. The Dan people live in the western part of the Ivory Coast and extend into Liberia. Dan masks are only carved by initiated members of the male Poro society. The masks are used during initiation ceremonies by male dancers. This Dan made mask is in great but worn condition with minor dirt, patina and a few chips in the wood on the back inside rim of the mask. This traditional mask would make a fine addition to any African art collection. This African mask measures 17 inches long by 11 inches wide. Be sure to add me to your favorites list.
